Probepacken/ Test packing

Heute haben wir uns in Flensburg auf dem Gelände des Efkk getroffen, alle Ausrüstung zwischen die Boote gekippt und versucht alles in die Boote zu kriegen. Da der Tarantella etwas kleiner ist versuchten wir die schweren Dinge dort hinein und die sperrigeren in den Speedliner zu packen. Hat eine Weile gedauert aber nach 2 Stunden hatten wir fast alles drin. Die letzte Schokolade die nicht mehr rein ging haben wir dann einfach aufgegessen.

Today we met at the Kanu Club in Flensburg put all our equipment and food between the kayaks and tried to get everything inside. As the Tarantella is a little bit smaller we tried to put the more heavy things in the Tarantella and the more bulky things into the Speedliner. At took us a while but after two hours nearly everything fits in. The last chocolate which was left we ate immediately.

Endlich durchgeimpft/ Finally full vaccinated

Endlich habe ich heute meine 2. Impfung mit Biontech Impfstoff erhalten. Ein kleiner Pieks für mich, aber ein wichtiger Beitrag für die Gesellschaft auf dem Weg zurück in die Normalität, wie ich denke. Dies war dann auch neben der obligatorischen Zahndurchsicht der wichtigste Punkt zur medizinischen Vorbereitung auf diese Reise.

Finally I got my second vaccination with Biontech vaccine today. A small puncture for me, but an important contribution for the society on our way back to normality, as I think. Beside my mandatory visit of a dentist this was the most important part of the medical preparation for this trip.

Aus dem Chaos wird Neues beginnen/ The new will start from chaos

So wie bei Trenk im Wohnzimmer sieht es aktuell bei uns beiden aus. Die umfangreiche Packliste muss abgearbeitet, Verpflegung eingekauft und verpackt werden. Ob das wirklich alles in die Boote passt ? Nun beim Probepacken am kommenden Freitag werden wir es wissen.

The chaos here in Trenk’s living room is typical for both of us. The large packing list has to worked off, food has to be bought and packed. If all this really fits into the kayaks ? Next friday when we start test packing we will know.

Müsliriegel backen/ making muesli bars

Um die Tagesverpflegung für die 4-wöchige Tour sicher zu stellen haben wir 6 Kg von den Müsliriegeln eingeplant die ich für diesen Zweck vor einigen Jahren entwickelt habe. Bei der Gelegenheit habe ich einen kurzen Film aufgenommen für alle die auf Tour auch manchmal Hunger haben.

For the meals in between on our 4-weeks trip we decided to make 6 Kg of the muesli-bars I created some years ago specially for this purpose. I took the chance and made a small film for all of you who are sometimes hungry on tour.

Pemmikan selber herstellen/ Self made Pemmikan

Seit vielen Jahren ist meine Lieblingsnahrung auf den Touren im Norden Spagetti mit Pemmikan. Nahrhaft, sättigend und lecker. Für mich perfekt. Leider ist Hr. Metzmacher inzwischen in Rente und die Firma Cathay wurde geschlossen. Da meine Vorräte an Original Pemmikan nun zur Neige gehen habe ich es jetzt erstmals selbst hergestellt. Das Trocknen des Rindfleischs ist recht zeitaufwendig aber die restlichen Zutaten (Salz, Palmfett und Gewürze) sind dann schnell beigemischt. Bei mir gibt jetzt erstmal die Varianten Röstzwiebeln und Knoblauch. Hm, lecker!

For many jears my favourite lunch during my trips in the north was spagetti with Pemmikan. Nutritous, satiably and tasty. Absolutely perfect for me. Unfortunately Mr. Metzmacher is now retired and his company Cathay was closed.. As my stock of original Pemmikan comes to an end I had to make my own Pemmikan for the first time. Drying of the beef takes a little bit of time but the rest of the components (salt, palmfat and spices) are added easy. Now have the types roasted onions and garlic. Hm, tasty!

Logistikvorbereitung abgeschlossen/ logistic preparations completed

Inzwischen konnten wir auch die noch offenen organisatorischen Punkte klären für die An- und Abreise.

• Campingplatz am Startpunkt Oskarshamn
• Parkmöglichkeit für das Auto für 4 Wochen
• Fährbuchung von Turku zurück nach Stockholm
• Busfahrt von Stockholm zurück nach Oskarshamn zum Auto am Ende der Tour

Jetzt bleiben uns noch 2 Wochen um die letzten Besorgungen bzgl. Ausrüstung und Verpflegung zu machen.

By now we have closed the last open logistic points for the arrival and return

• Campground at our startingpoint Oskarshamn
• Parkingarea for the car for weeks there
• Ferry reservation from Turku back to Stockholm
• bus transfer from Stockholm back to the car in Oskarshamn at the end of the trip

From now on we still have two weeks for the last shoppings for equipment and food.

Kartenmaterial/ charts

Zusätzlich zu digitalen Karten im GPS führen wir auf der Tour auch wieder umfangreiche klassische Papierkarten mit uns. Denn einige für uns wichtige Informationen wie z.B. militärische Sperrgebiete sind auf unseren Digitalkarten nicht verfügbar. Durch die tausenden von kleinen Inseln durch die uns diese Reise führen wird haben wir uns zum größten Teil für Karten im Maßstab 1:50.000 bis 1:100.000 entschieden. Für die schwedische Seite vertrauen wir hier z.B. auf die Serie von Calazo.

Additional to our digital charts in the GPS we use a large number of classic paper charts on tour. Because some important informations like restricted areas are not shown in the digital charts. As we will paddle through thousends of very small islands during this trip we decided to use maps with a scale between 1:50.000 to 1:100.000. On the swedish side for example we use the maps from Calazo.

Die Bootswahl/ choosing the right kayaks

Auf dieser Tour müssen wir die Boote weder verschiffen noch im Flugzeug mitnehmen. Zudem befahren wir mit der Ostsee ein eher ruhiges Revier mit flachen, wenn auch felsigen Inseln. Vor diesem Grund verzichten wir auf den Einsatz der schweren und langsameren PE-Kajaks. Zum Einsatz kommen werden Trenk’s Tarantella von Rockpool und mein Speedliner von Lettmann. Beides Boote die in die Klasse der „Fast-Seakayaks“ gehören und ausreichend Stauraum für solch lange Touren bieten.

For this trip we have no need to ship the kayaks by boat or plane. Besides this the Baltic Sea is more calm than other regions of the world with many small, flat islands even when they are rocky. Therefor we decided not to use our heavy PE kayaks. WWe will use Trenk’s Tarantella from Rockpool and my Speedliner from Lettmann. Both kayaks belong to the class of „Fast-Seakayaks“ and both have enough loading space for this kind of longer expeditions.

Am Anfang steht die Idee/ At the beginning there is just an idea.

Schon das Jahr 2020 war urlaubstechnisch kaum zu planen. Für 2021 hatten wir noch die Hoffnung das sich die Grenzen frühzeitig öffnen würden und so eine Reise nach Grönland möglich wäre. Durch die im Frühjahr aber immer noch undurchsichtige Lage haben wir dann im Juni endgültig umgeschwnkt und beschlossen in diesem Jahr die schwedischen und finnischen Schären-Inseln zu durchqueren. Herausgekommen ist eine durchaus anspruchsvolle etwa 700km lange Tour von Oskarsham in Schweden über Gotland, durch den Stockholmer Schärengarten und durch die Alandinseln bis nach Turku in Finnland.

The year 2020 was already impossible for making make any plans for larger kayak trips. At the beginning of 2021 we still had the hope that the borders would open early enough to make a trip to Greenland. Unfortunately the situation in june was still untransparent and so we changed the plan to a crossing the swedish and finnish archepelago. At the end we found an ambitous trip of around 700km from Oskarsham in Sweden, passing Gotland and the Alands up to Turku in Finnland.
